There was memorial ceremony held on Tuesday at Big Beach to recognize the anniversary of the tsunami that hit Japan on March 11th, 2011. That day Ucluelet welcomed over 70 students from Japan who were part of the International Volunteer University Student Association. They joined with the Japan Love Project to help clean up tsunami debris on local beachs in and near Ucluelet.

Ucluelet on Vancouver Island has been awarded special funding to clean up debris from the massive tsunami that hit Japan three years ago.
Ucluelet will receive $81,538 over one year for the Ucluelet and Barkley Sound Shoreline Cleanup Program. which covers a 100-kilometre area within sections of Ucluelet, Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, including the Broken Islands, and along Yuulu'il'ath territory.
The funding comes from a one-time grant of about $1 million presented to Canada from Japan to help with cleanup efforts, according to a provincial government news release Friday.
