Trumpeter Swans in Ucluelet

This photo of a trumpeter swan was taken by a local whale watching tour operator Subtidal Adventures on a recent trip out on the water.

Trumpeter swans can be seen this time of year on the west coast of Vancouver Island.  They like to hang out in lagoons or shallower water, much like the lagoon behind the sand dunes north of Wickaninnish Beach in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

They can be seen around Ucluelet and Tofino November through February along with other seasonal birds.  Other parts of the year they nest in shallow, unpolluted water that is far away from human presence.  They live in the northwest, with most of the population in Alaska, but are migratory and come to visit us each year!
